This is one of the most persistent myths and it is simply not true. Modern air source heat pumps are engineered to extract heat from outdoor air at temperatures as low as minus 15 to minus 25 degrees Celsius, depending on the model. UK winters rarely drop below minus 5 degrees, well within the operating range of any quality heat pump.
Heat pumps are widely used in Scandinavia, where temperatures are far colder than anything experienced in Birmingham or the West Midlands. The technology is mature, proven and specifically designed for cold climates. Efficiency does decrease slightly as temperatures drop, but a properly sized and installed system will heat your home comfortably throughout a British winter.
The upfront cost of a heat pump is higher than a like-for-like gas boiler replacement. However, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides grants of up to £7,500, which significantly narrows the gap. After the grant, the net cost of a heat pump can be comparable to a premium boiler installation.

Modern air source heat pumps operate at around 40 to 50 decibels at one metre distance — roughly the same volume as a quiet conversation or a modern refrigerator. From inside the house, you are unlikely to hear the outdoor unit at all. From a few metres away in the garden, the sound is minimal.

Underfloor heating works well with heat pumps because it operates at lower water temperatures, which is where heat pumps are most efficient. However, underfloor heating is absolutely not a requirement. Many homes across Birmingham use heat pumps with standard radiators.

Heat pumps work most efficiently when they run for longer periods at a steady, lower temperature rather than cycling on and off at high temperatures like a traditional boiler. This is a different approach to heating, not a slower one. With the right heating controls and settings, your home maintains a comfortable, consistent temperature throughout the day.
Many homeowners find that the gentle, even warmth provided by a heat pump is actually more comfortable than the peaks and troughs of a gas boiler cycling on and off.
This is a national infrastructure question rather than a reason for individual homeowners not to act. The UK grid is being upgraded to accommodate increased electrification of heating and transport. For individual households, a heat pump typically adds less electrical demand than an electric shower or an electric vehicle charger — both of which the grid already handles routinely.
Pairing a heat pump with solar PV and battery storage can further reduce your grid demand by powering the heat pump with self-generated electricity.
